# Understand AI search visibility

> How AI tools choose what to recommend, what RankAI tracks, and what you need to do.

**AI tools recommend businesses they can find, read, and trust.** RankAI checks how AI answers talk about you, then improves your content to close the gaps.

<Note>**Nothing to do.** RankAI runs the checks automatically. Open **AI Search Visibility** every couple of weeks to see the trend.</Note>

<Info>**In RankAI:** Sidebar → **AI Search Visibility** · `rankai.ai/dashboard/<project>/ai-visibility`</Info>

Your customers ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Meta AI, and Google AI Overviews. RankAI currently tracks **ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews**.

## What RankAI does

* Asks each tracked AI tool your prompts: the questions your customers ask.
* Records whether each answer mentions you, cites your website, and how it describes you.
* Compares you with your competitors.
* Flags gaps where competitors are named and you aren't. On Growth, RankAI also acts on them in your content.

## Your options

* Review or add prompts. See [Choose your prompts](/ai-visibility/prompts).
* Read the answers behind each prompt to see exactly what AI tools say.
* Learn what each number means in [AI visibility metrics](/ai-visibility/metrics).

## Avoid these mistakes

* **Treating one check as the truth.** AI answers vary from run to run. Watch the trend across checks.
* **Confusing a mention with a visit.** Being named in an answer doesn't mean someone clicked through.
* **Changing prompts often.** New prompts change your numbers. Keep your core set stable so trends stay comparable.

## What to expect

* Mentions can appear before any website traffic from AI tools.
* AI tools that search the web, like ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews, can only cite pages they can find. Strong search visibility helps.
